AI-Powered Green AI for Sustainable Shipping Project Granted Funding to Reduce Shipping Emissions

The Norwegian Government’s Green Platform initiative has awarded NOK 44 million (approximately $4.2 million) to the Green AI for Sustainable Shipping (GASS) project, led by e-navigation specialist NAVTOR. This significant investment aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize the shipping industry and significantly reduce its environmental impact.

NAVTOR recognizes the lack of systematic data-driven solutions for optimizing energy efficiency onboard ships, primarily due to the complexity of ship operating environments and the challenges of processing data sources like AIS, which can be incomplete and unreliable. GASS will address these limitations by utilizing a digital twin approach, employing AI to analyze vast amounts of ship data and generate actionable insights.

“NAVTOR considers this a significant step forward in our efforts towards sustainable shipping,” says Bjørn Åge Hjøllo, chief sustainability officer at NAVTOR. “By incorporating a great amount of data from vessels and combining these with a digital twin, we are developing services that can monitor, analyze, and optimize fuel consumption.”

The GASS project brings together a consortium of experts from NAVTOR, Grieg Star, Maritime CleanTech, Scandinavian Reach Technologies, Simula Research Laboratory, SinOceanic Shipping, and Sustainable Energy. Together, they are committed to developing AI-powered solutions that enable vessel owners and operators to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance vessel performance, and comply with environmental regulations.

“The Green Platform’s objective is to accelerate the green transition in business,” says Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Jan Christian Vestre. “This project is a shining example of how technological innovation can contribute to sustainable shipping and a greener future.”

GASS is one of nine green projects that have received funding through the Green Platform scheme, demonstrating the Norwegian Government’s unwavering commitment to supporting environmentally conscious initiatives. As the project progresses, NAVTOR and its partners will continue to refine their AI-powered solutions, paving the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping industry.
